Tooth Extractions

Tooth Extractions in Reedley, CA
Reedley Family Dental removes teeth that cannot be saved, including simple extractions, surgical extractions and impacted wisdom teeth. We perform extractions in our office on W Manning Ave in Reedley, CA, using local anesthetic and digital X-rays or 3D imaging to plan each case.
Saving a natural tooth is always our first choice. When a tooth is too damaged, infected or crowded to keep, a careful extraction protects your health and prepares the area for a replacement tooth if you want one.

- A cracked tooth that extends below the gum line

Simple vs. Surgical Extractions
A simple extraction removes a tooth that is fully visible above the gums. After numbing the area, the dentist loosens the tooth and removes it.
A surgical extraction is used when a tooth is broken at the gum line, has curved roots or has not fully come in. A small opening in the gum allows the tooth to be removed, sometimes in sections. Most surgical extractions, including many wisdom teeth removals, are done in our office.
What to Expect During an Extraction
1. Exam and X-rays
We check the tooth, the roots and the surrounding bone, and review your health history and medications.
2. Numbing
Local anesthetic numbs the tooth and gums so you feel pressure but not sharp pain. Read our instructions before anesthesia.
3. Removal
The tooth is removed gently. If needed, we place stitches and gauze to control bleeding.
4. Protecting the socket
When you plan to replace the tooth with an implant, bone grafting may be recommended to preserve the jawbone. Alveoplasty can smooth the bone before dentures.
Recovery After a Tooth Extraction
- Bite on gauze for 30–45 minutes to help a blood clot form
- Do not rinse, spit or use a straw for the first 24 hours
- Use a cold compress for swelling during the first day
- Eat soft foods and chew on the other side
- Avoid smoking, which raises the risk of dry socket

Replacing an Extracted Tooth
Leaving a gap can let nearby teeth shift and the jawbone shrink. Options include a dental implant, a bridge, dentures or full-arch implants when many teeth are missing. We discuss these options before your extraction.

Does a tooth extraction hurt?
The area is numbed, so you should feel pressure but not sharp pain. Soreness afterward is normal and usually improves within a few days.
